Accelerate regenerative farming next to coasts and waterways through training and mentoring farmers to their farm transition.
WHY
This program aims to support farmers working on lands located close to waterways and to the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, to transition to regenerative agricultural practices. This will protect and restore our precious waterways, increase biodiversity and contribute to climate change mitigation.
Nutrient leaching into rivers, soil erosion, and occupying land directly next to rivers without riparian buffers, is highly negatively impacting biodiversity in the overall ecosystem both on land and in the sea.
In Greece the importance of this program is especially high, since it has the 13th longest coastline of all countries in the world.
OVERVIEW
of the program
I
SUPPORT FARMERS TO TRANSITION
Farmers close to waterways or the sea will be supported to transition their farming operation implementing elements in their farm (riparian buffers, windbreaks, water managemet feautures) to make their farming operation more resilient, increase its biodiversity supporting capacity and prevent soil erosion while increasing infiltration and water storage capacity.
->
TRAININGS
A series of trainings, online and on-site will be conducted to share tools, knowledge and create capacities for farmers to design and manage their farming transition.
->
MENTORING THROGH THE TRANSITION
Alongside the trainings farmers will be supported with feedback on their farm's designs, to refine details and assure feasibility and technical correctness.
->
SUPPORT THROUGH OUR PARTNERS
Connecting the farmers with partner organizations of ours that work in the field, farmers can get support in the form of trees, volunteers, research programs or access to markets.
I
EVENTS AND AWARENESS RAISING
Planting events in farms going through transition, open to the public will further increase awareness about the issue and vulnerability of waterways and their importance for ecosystems health. Broad media presence will further drive more farmers on our website to investigate resources, and visit farms in their transition.
I
RESEARCH EVALUATION AND CONTINUATION
Connecting the pilot farms to universities, researchers, as well as other programs, will help us assess the success of this program, analyzing its crucial elements, while building on further programs to continue support the agricultural transition in Greece.
