Why would a farmer plant trees or plants that are not the main crop? Because support species perform vital ecosystem functions that reduce external inputs and strengthen the entire farm system. They can provide mulch, fertility, shade, wind protection, pollinator habitat, water retention, and organic matter while accelerating soil regeneration and biodiversity recovery.
